INSTRUMENTATION: PRACTICAL PHYSIOLOGY

  1. PRACTICAL PHYSIOLOGY

Equipment Used in Blood Physiology Laboratory and Their uses

1. Sphygmomanometer

Measures blood pressure (systolic and diastolic).

2. Stethoscope

Used together with a sphygmomanometer to listen to heart sounds, pulse, and breathing.

3. Spirometer

Measures lung volumes and capacities such as tidal volume, vital capacity, etc.

4. Peak Flow Meter

Measures peak expiratory flow rate (PEFR) to assess airway function.

5. Weighing Balance

Measures body weight.

6. Height Meter / Stadiometer

Measures standing height for calculating BMI.

7. Thermometer (Digital or Mercury)

Measures body temperature.

8. ECG Machine (Electrocardiograph)

Measures electrical activity of the heart and detects heart rhythms.

9. Glucometer

Measures blood glucose level.

10. Stopwatch / Timer

Measures time in physiological experiments (e.g., reaction time, pulse rate per minute).

11. Pulse Oximeter

Measures oxygen saturation (SpO₂) and pulse rate.

12. Calipers (Skinfold Caliper)

Measures body fat percentage through skinfold thickness.

13. Respirometer

Measures rate of respiration and oxygen consumption in animals or humans.

14. Hemoglobinometer

Measures the hemoglobin concentration in blood.

15. Colorimeter / Spectrophotometer

Measures absorbance of solutions, used in hemoglobin and biochemical tests.

16. ECG Electrodes & Leads

Used with ECG machine to record heart electrical signals.

17. Dynamometer

Measures muscle strength (grip strength).

18. Ph Meter

Measures acidity or alkalinity of blood or solutions.

19. Centrifuge (for measurement tests)

Separates blood components for measuring PCV, plasma volume, etc.

20. Microhematocrit Reader

Measures packed cell volume (PCV) after centrifugation
